Over the last decade, the London Korean Music Festival has introduced me to a number of impressive acts that combine traditional folk instruments such as the gayageum and geomungo with contemporary elements, and Hilgeum are one of the most original and bewitching yet. This performance, partially in collaboration with charismatic Anglo-Polish vocalist/violinist Alice Zawadzki fused ceremonial intensity, beauty and a mildly experimental edge to great effect.
